This summer the weather gods have been with my family allowing us to spend practically every weekend at the beach. Nothing makes me happier. I can literally sit in the sand or stand by the ocean’s edge for hours in total self-reflection mode and get lost in my own thoughts.
This past weekend, during my intense reflective time, I wondered if my fascination would wane as I got older. Easy answer – no way! All the things I loved doing at the beach as a kid I still love doing today. Unless you count the extended recovery time it now takes from being thrashed around in the rough surf. I’m definitely not 13 years old anymore, something another mom quickly pointed out to me as a huge wave tossed me on land like a dead fish. This got me thinking about beach experiences everyone should have no matter your age. I’m sure there are more but these are on my must-do list. Note: This list does not include wearing a hat or using a high SPF. I’m not your mother and you should know that already.
Run toward the ocean and splash in the waves. The rougher the surf the better. Who cares if you lose your swimsuit (which I did) or it gets filled with sand and you get tossed around like rag doll (which also happened). Treat those waves like a boss!
Rock your swimsuit. No matter what style you prefer, show confidence and get out there and own the beach. No one really cares what you look like but you and the little voice in your head. Tell her to STFU! As a bonus beach experience, if you’re on a nude beach take off your top! When in Rome, as they say — just make sure you’re actually at a nude beach so you don’t get arrested.
Build a sand castle. One of the best beach experiences is building a sand castle, and it’s not just for kids. You don’t have to schlep every sand toy ever invented in order to make a masterpiece. All you need is a cup and your imagination.
Take pictures. Whether with kids, family, friends or alone, be sure to capture the beauty and serenity of the beach, ocean, surf and sand. Every time you look back you’ll remember how happy you were in that moment, and how much fun you had riding the waves and rocking your swimsuit.
Watch a sunset. Nothing is more beautiful than nature’s canvas of a colorful sunset. Dusk can make the most beautiful and peaceful beach experiences and memories, and when it’s over, you’ll be ready to come back the next morning to catch a sunrise.
If you haven’t gone to the beach this summer, get to it! Summer is almost over but you still have time. I’d love for you to share your favorite beach experiences too.
